Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, was completed in October 1791 for the clarinettist Anton Stadler. It consists of three movements, in a fast–slow–fast succession.

The work was completed a few weeks before the composer's death, and has been described as his swan-song and his last great completed work. The date of its first performance is not certain, but may have been 16 October 1791 in Prague.

The concerto was written to be played on the basset clarinet, which can play lower notes than an ordinary clarinet, but after the death of Mozart it was published with changes to the solo part to allow performance on conventional instruments. The manuscript score is lost, but from the latter part of the 20th century onwards many performances of the work have been given on basset clarinets in conjectural reconstructions of Mozart's original.

For the first time Martin Fröst has recorded as both performer and conductor, leading the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, of which he is chief conductor, in Mozart’s “Prague” and “Jupiter” Symphonies, Piano Concerto no. 25 (with soloist Lucas Debargue), arias from the operas La clemenza di Tito (with Ann Hallenberg) and Idomeneo (with Elin Rombo) and his third recording of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.

“There has never been a more important time for his music, I feel that the music of the Enlightenment has gained a new relevance in our era of desolation, where we must create and recreate hope.”, says Fröst.
Each of the release’s two albums focuses on a moment in Mozart’s life when the composer appeared to teeter on a knife-edge between triumph and disaster, joy and depression, life and death. It was these moments that brought music of the most extraordinary beauty and intensity from the composer.

Baroque clarinet: Steven Fox after J. G. Zencker, 1740–50. The clarinet is made of stained boxwood with two brass keys.
This is the kind of clarinet that Molter's concertos would have been written for, and for which Telemann wrote.

Soprano Chalumeau: Brian Ackerman, 1990s. Boxwood with two brass keys. The chalumeau is another ancestor of the modern clarinet, which was in use in the early 18th century.
